See the world through the eyes of a remote monitoring centre operator

Every job has its own specifics and uniqueness. The role of a monitoring centre operator is no exception. Tomas Blazo, Operations Manager at Remote Monitoring centre- SPACE, took us into a world where modern technology and human supervision are intertwined to ensure perfect safety and smooth operations in a wide range of environments.

Diverse work
The work of an operator is extremely diverse. “The basis is the monitoring of objects via camera systems, which is now supported by advanced analytics,” says Tomas Blazo. The technologies allow not only visual but also audio reactions to various events. But it’s not just about tracking movement and processes within a given facility, it’s also about interpreting and reacting to events in real time.

A story from practice

Martin Lacina, shift supervisor, shared one of the most interesting experiences that reveals the impact an attentive operator can have on the real world: “A lady went to the store, tied her dog in the lobby. 5 minutes later a man came in, untied the dog and left with it. It was a show dog and therefore more expensive. The lady, who was looking for him in vain after returning from the store, filed a criminal complaint against the unknown offender. This brought the matter to the attention of the Police, who asked our surveillance centre Space to investigate.” The task of tracking down the man who took the dog and ran away with it was given to Martin Lacina, who adds with a smile: “It was already running on the TV news in the evening that a search was on for the said dog. When I saw that, I called my wife – I was the one who was looking for this.” The whole story ended happily. About 14 days later, based on the information and records provided, the Police arrested the man and returned the dog to its owner.

Modern technology
Every day in the life of an operator brings new challenges. “It depends on the requirements of the clients and the specifics of the facility,” explains Blazo. Operators perform a variety of tasks as instructed by the shift commander, tracking down events for clients or the  Police. This involves full computer work, telephone and email communication. The variety of work ensures that the job does not become stereotypical. Today’s operators must be proficient in a wide range of technologies. It’s about combining different systems effectively into a unified whole. This means operators are constantly learning and adapting to new tools and processes.

Key skills for the operator’s job
Basic user-level computer skills, communication skills and the ability to react quickly to change are essential for success in this role. “We expect our team to be able to work effectively with technology and keep a calm head even in challenging stressful situations,” Blažo emphasises.

Work schedule and training
The surveillance centre operates non-stop, which means that operators work 12-hour shifts, including night shifts. New operators undergo thorough training to ensure they are fully prepared for whatever their shift may bring. In addition, they are supervised by a ‘trainer’ when they start, who is there to help them during their first weeks on the job.

A great working atmosphere and team

Gabriela Sivakova, Remote monitoring centre Operator, described the working atmosphere and the team “We have great camaraderie here. And I say this knowing that I work across all shifts and am with all the people at work every day. The collective is friendly, we help each other. New colleagues acclimatise quickly and then fit in well with us.”

Career progression and motivation
When it comes to motivating operators, it all depends on their activity and willingness to work. Operators can progress to senior operator or shift leader positions. In addition to a basic hourly salary, they are entitled to various bonuses that motivate employees to perform better. These include rewards for various interceptions, prevention of stolen goods, and various performances within the systems that operators work with in the surveillance center. A proactive person can earn good money.

Why not try a career as an operator?
For those who are looking for a job where they can use their technology skills while working in a dynamic environment, the position of an operator at the Remote Monitoring Centre- SPACE,  presents an attractive opportunity. “If you are proactive and want to work, the door is open to you,” concludes Tomas Blazo, inviting you to join the Remote Monitoring Centre team.
